This week’s Advent activity can be completed with a group or as a solo project. Use it to create a space for reflection, community and celebration as you anticipate the joy of Christmas.

Advent Calendar Prayer Chain
Materials needed:
Colored construction paper or cardstock in Advent colors (purple and pink)
Scissors
Glue or tape
Marker or pen
Ribbon or string
Small clothespins or paper clips

Cut strips:
Cut the colored construction paper or cardstock into strips, about 1 inch wide and 6-8 inches long. You can use purple and pink strips to represent the Advent colors.

Write Bible verses and prayers:
On each strip write a Bible verse or a short prayer related to the themes of hope, peace, joy and love.

Create a chain:
Form a loop with the first strip and secure it with glue or tape.  Insert the next strip through the loop and secure that, creating a chain link. Continue this process for each strip, alternating between purple and pink to represent the different weeks of Advent.

Hang the chain:
Attach a ribbon or string to the first and last links of the chain, creating a loop for hanging. You can hang the chain on a wall, door or mantel.

Countdown to Christmas:
Each day remove one link, taking a moment to read and reflect on the Bible verse or prayer written on it. This Advent calendar prayer chain not only serves as a visual reminder of the season but also incorporates Scripture and prayer into your daily countdown. It’s a meaningful and engaging way for individuals and families to focus on the spiritual aspects of Advent.

As we continue to celebrate Advent together, take inspiration from other Living Lutheran activities and seasonal hymns to create additional ornaments for your reflection tree. Every Friday during Advent, Living Lutheran will share solo and group activities, prayers and devotionals. Make sure to follow along!
