At the 12th Assembly of The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in May in Windhoek, Namibia, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton was elected vice president of the LWF North America region. She succeeds Bishop Susan Johnson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada in the role, which is part of the executive committee of the council. “I am honored to join my sisters and brothers in service through The Lutheran World Federation,” Eaton said. “Together as 145 churches around the world, we face significant challenges but also new opportunities to bear Christ’s ministries of reconciliation in a deeply divided world.”
Three other ELCA members were tapped to lead: Robin Steinke, president of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., was elected to council as chair of the committee for theology and public witness. William Flippin, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Atlanta and ELCA Church Council member, and Cheryl Philip, member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Chicago, were elected as members at large. The newly elected council met for the first time on May 17 in Windhoek.
