Para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre estamos hablando con luteranos de ascendencia latiné para amplificar las voces de nuestros hermanos en Cristo. Hoy estamos hablando con María Santa Cruz, quien sirve como asistente del obispo del ministerio latiné en el Sínodo de Pacífica.

¿Cómo cree que la ELCA puede amplificar mejor las voces latinés?
Los diferentes sínodos de la ELCA, que tienen muchos puestos dentro de los distintos ministerios, podrían amplificar las voces latinés primero reconociendo la importancia y la responsabilidad de la representación. La comunidad latiné merece tener un líder asignado para cada ministerio que pueda acompañar y guiar su crecimiento y desarrollo.
¿En qué formas puede la ELCA ser más inclusiva de la comunidad latiné?
Ser una iglesia más inclusiva y acogedora es un regalo para todos. Una de las formas en que podríamos esforzarnos por incluir a la comunidad latiné es celebrando y adoptando las ricas tradiciones culturales que las personas latinés comparten con mucha alegría. Incluir y honrar estas tradiciones en fechas importantes podría extender nuestro alcance y crear una unión de colaboración a largo plazo. Es muy importante mantener la curiosidad y honestidad cuando pensamos en cómo podemos abrir nuestros corazones a nuestros hermanos y hermanas latinés. Por ejemplo, podemos hacer preguntas intencionales sobre tradiciones con las que no estamos familiarizados para que podamos sentirnos cómodos con cosas que se sienten, suenan y saben diferentes de lo que estamos acostumbrados.
¿Cómo ve a la comunidad latiné representada en su sínodo e iglesias locales?
Afortunadamente, mi sínodo ha reconocido cuidadosa y conscientemente la importancia de tener una representante que sea la voz directa de la comunidad latiné. Pasamos por una crisis en la que muchos latinos están viviendo momentos extremadamente difíciles. Mi sugerencia es que los sínodos desarrollen literatura informativa para las iglesias locales de habla hispana, si tienen la capacidad de hacerlo. Esta es una excelente manera de involucrar e inspirar más participación de la comunidad. Al tener literatura en español para personas que enfrentan una barrera lingüística, inmediatamente creamos una sensación de inclusión y reconocimiento.
¿Qué le da esperanza?
Lo que me da esperanza es que Dios está trabajando activamente en cada comunidad vulnerable. Esto lo sé con certeza. He visto y experimentado personalmente el hecho de que mi sínodo tomó la importante decisión de contratar a una asistente del obispo que sea defensora directa de la comunidad latiné.
¿Por qué cosas ora usted?
Mi oración diaria es ver un día a nuestra iglesia unida en espíritu, esperanza y fe.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, we are speaking with Lutherans of Latiné descent to amplify the voices of our siblings in Christ. Today we are speaking to Maria Santa Cruz, who serves as the assistant to the bishop for Latiné ministry with the Pacifica Synod.

How do you believe the ELCA can be better amplify Latiné voices?
The different synods of the ELCA, which have many positions within the various ministries, could amplify Latiné voices by first recognizing the importance and responsibility of representation. The Latiné community deserves to have an assigned leader for each ministry who can accompany and guide their growth and development.
What are ways in which the ELCA can be more inclusive of the Latiné community?
Being a more inclusive and welcoming church is a gift to everyone. One of the ways in which we can strive to be inclusive of the Latiné community is by celebrating and embracing the rich cultural traditions that Latiné people share with much joy. Including and honoring these traditions on important dates could expand our reach and create a long-term collaborative union. It is very important to stay curious and honest when thinking about how we can open our hearts to our Latiné brothers and sisters. For example, we can ask intentional questions about traditions we are unfamiliar with so that we can get comfortable with things that feel, sound and taste different from what we are accustomed to.
How do you see the Latiné community represented in your synod and local churches?
Fortunately my synod has carefully and consciously recognized the importance of having a representative who is the direct voice of the Latiné community. We are living in a crisis where many Latiné people are living in extremely difficult moments. My suggestion is that synods create informative literature for local Spanish-speaking churches if they have the capacity to do so. This is a great way to engage and inspire more participation from the community. By having Spanish literature readily available for people with a language barrier, we immediately create a feeling of inclusivity and acknowledgment.
What gives you hope?
What gives me hope is that God is actively working on every vulnerable community. This I know for sure. I have personally seen and experienced my synod make the important decision of hiring a bishop´s assistant who is a direct advocate for the Latiné community.
What do you pray for?
My daily prayer is to one day see our church united in spirit, hope and faith.
